„It is as if the sign aspired to evoke our understanding, by fair means or foul. But when we eventually understand it, by what means do we do that?“
Welcome!
There are many roads leading to my art. This home page is one of them, providing a brief glimpse and information on my work. I hope you will find things to raise your interest and joy to discover!
Circulating signs
In my work I move along the line between fine arts and graphic notation. In the course of time a unique and distinctive world of shapes emerged, a universe of spontaneously created signs. In my latest works these signs merge into complex structures. Generally we think of signs as the basic elements to form language. In graphic terms a sign is also the marking of a trail on a respective background. Adapting such trails I developed my own unique technique and a very personal way of creating art.
Trails (as a method)
At the beginning of a creative process I only need two things: a black piece of paper, the size of a postcard, and a tiny soldering iron, with which I burn finest lines and openings into the paper until a delicate network has emerged. This work is carried out on such a small scale that it can barely be controlled by the hand and the eye. Thus the unpredictable can unfold, allowing surprizes in the creative process.
Once the structure is rendered on a computer, I find a variety of options for reprocessing and redesigning the structures. Structures can be taken apart and be remerged in a new way, and, above all, the true scale template can be altered into any desired size. One of my works is the 16 by 8,5 meters facade design of the Kunsttempel Buchholz, an art venue near Hamburg.
Ground scores
For the work I plan in the near future, it is most important to me to appeal to all our senses when we are dealing with art. I would love to emphasize the physical experience, which I want to provide to anyone dealing with my art. What I call ground scores is art work that I created for floors, using sketches and designs of different works of mine. Due to their size we can walk across or play on these ground scores. Tutorials and other courses, workshops and one-day events, offer participants the opportunity to establish a communicative relation to the ground scores. What I want to focus on in workshops and events are on one hand dance explorations and playful movement experiments to sounds and noises, and on the other hand word associations that can be expressed in texts and vocals. The aim is to encourage artistic impulses and initiate creative processes that can interprete the ground score and alter our perception of it. In this way the free play keeps finding new movements.
